Key Scripture
John 16:7-15
— The foundation of the whole message: Jesus promises the Advocate who convicts the world and glorifies the Son.
John 14:15-17
, 21
— The turning point: the Spirit is “with you and will be in you,” assuring believers they are not orphans.
Acts 1:8
— The empowering climax: the Spirit comes upon disciples so they can witness “to the ends of the earth.”
Main Points
1. Para — The Spirit alongside (convicting and drawing)
Greek para, “beside”: the Spirit stands next to unbelievers, stirring their hearts when they hear the gospel (
John 16:8-11
).
He is the Paraklētos—advocate, counselor, legal helper—pleading Christ’s case to the lost.
Hardened resistance can lead to spiritual deafness; repeated rejection is the essence of blaspheming the Spirit.
2. En — The Spirit within (indwelling and transforming)
At conversion the Spirit moves from “with” to “in” (
John 14:17
).
Believers become His temple (1 Cor 6:19; 3:16).
Indwelling brings:
• New life (
Romans 8:1-11
)
• Guidance that overrides fleshly impulses
• The cry “Abba, Father” (
Galatians 4:6
)
Illustration: the speaker’s own battle with anger—only the Spirit inside restrains the “old man.”
