Notes - 1 Timothy 6
Guard the Treasure of Godly Living
Scripture References
•1 Timothy 6:1-21 ↗
•Hebrews 6:5 ↗
•Luke 23:1-3 ↗
Introduction
•Paul’s final chapter to Timothy ↗  highlights “orthopraxy”—right Christian living—as the primary witness to a watching world.
•Timothy, a young pastor, is commanded to “teach and insist” that believers adopt Jesus’ own instructions for daily relationships (workplace, family, church).
•The sermon frames these commands as non-negotiable for everyone who has confessed Jesus as Lord.
Key Points / Exposition
1. Teach and Insist (vv.1-2)
•Paul places authority on Timothy ↗  to press these truths “in the Lord,” meaning they apply to Christians, not the unregenerate world.
•The core issue: believers must display respect and holy conduct so God’s name and doctrine will not be slandered.
2. Christian Conduct in the Workplace (Slave / Master parallel)
•First-century slavery is likened to modern employer-employee dynamics.
•Workers: show full respect, avoid gossip, exhibit Christ’s character.
•Employers (believing masters): devote yourselves to employees’ welfare, not self-advancement.
•Result: God’s reputation is protected and His teaching is adorned.
3. Recognizing and Rejecting False Teaching (vv.3-5)
•“Anyone who teaches otherwise” reveals conceit and ignorance.
•Marks of drifting from Jesus’ teaching: unhealthy controversies, quarrels over words, envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions, constant friction.
•Such minds have been “robbed of the truth,” often twisting godliness into a route to financial gain.
4. Godliness with Contentment (vv.6-10)
•True gain: a life marked by holiness plus satisfaction with basic provision.
•Warning: craving riches is a spiritual trap leading to ruin, the root of many evils, and even departure from the faith.
5. The Four Imperatives for the Man/Woman of God (vv.11-12)
1.Flee - run from pride, greed, and doctrinal independence.
2.Pursue - righteousness (horizontal), godliness (vertical), faith, love, endurance, gentleness.
3.Fight - contend for the faith amid cultural resistance.
4.Take Hold - grasp eternal life, anchored in the “good confession” of Jesus’ lordship, just as Christ owned His kingship before Pilate (Luke 23:1-3).
6. Guard the Deposit (vv.20-21)
•Timothy ↗  must protect the entrusted Word, turning away from godless chatter and counterfeit “knowledge.”
•Illustration: Rehoboam lost the temple’s gold to Pharaoh Shishak through folly; replacing it with bronze symbolized a downgraded spiritual life. Likewise, the church must not exchange the priceless Word for lesser substitutes.
Major Lessons & Revelations
•Holiness is not optional; it is the believer’s collective witness.
•Obedience precedes wisdom—only the submissive learn God’s ways.
•Contentment breaks the enemy’s lure of materialism.
•The stability of the church depends on guarding Scripture from dilution.
Practical Application
•Examine speech at work: replace complaints about supervisors with prayer and respect.
•Budget check: practice generosity; set tangible “Treasures in heaven” goals.
•Weekly discipline: memorize and live one clear Biblical command; refuse to debate it away.
•Accountability pair: meet monthly to ask, “Are you fleeing, pursuing, fighting, and taking hold?”
Conclusion & Call to Response
•The chapter closes with “Grace be with you,” signaling that divine enablement accompanies obedience.
•Believers are urged to recommit to their original “good confession,” submit to Christ’s Word in every arena, and restore any “gold” lost to complacency.
Prayer
“Father, thank You for the goodness of Your Word. Shape us beyond Sunday—make us holy as You are holy. Strengthen us to flee worldly snares, pursue righteousness, fight the good fight, and guard the treasure You’ve entrusted, all for Your glory. Amen.”
